Senior Software Engineer - Embedded, C++

About the team

Roku pioneered streaming to the TV and continues to innovate and lead the industry. The team is responsible for developing core features and enabling streaming applications such as Netflix, YouTube, and BBC on the Roku platform.

About the role

As a member of the Roku OS, OS Extensions and Apps Team, you will design, develop, and optimize software that powers the Roku streaming experience for millions of users worldwide.

What you’ll be doing

• Understand architecture needs to enable top‑tier streaming applications on Roku OS and develop software that delivers a world‑class streaming experience.
• Work on audio, video, and graphics functionality porting and partner‑application certification requirements.
• Implement embedded browser technologies such as WebKit and Chromium used in partner applications.
• Deliver new features and functionality on time, both independently and in small teams.
• Demonstrate excellence in C++ development and produce high‑performance, ultra‑reliable software.
• Apply modular, maintainable design to extend an existing C++ code base.
• Dig deeply to find solutions to tough user‑impacting problems.

We’re excited if you have

• 5+ years of relevant software development experience.
• Extensive programming experience with C++.
• Proven track record in embedded system development and Linux operating systems.
• Deep understanding of multi‑threaded development and concurrency management.
• Experience with embedded browsers such as Chromium, WebKit, Opera.
• Experience in API design and portable code development.
• Ability to estimate software tasks and work to schedule.
• Ability to architect, implement, and test systems for performance and low resource consumption.
• Good understanding of open‑source development.
• Knowledge of TCP/IP, TLS, HTTP, DRM technologies (PlayReady, Widevine) and streaming protocols such as WebRTC, HLS, or DASH.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science or equivalent engineering experience.

Our Hybrid Work Approach

Teams work in the office Monday through Thursday. Fridays are flexible for remote work unless a role requires a five‑day in‑office presence.
