About the role

As a senior member of the Cardiac Physiology Team you will independently undertake routine and complex diagnostic investigations, provide specialist support, guidance and interpretation in Echocardiography, and lead the team in operational and clinical leadership. The role requires strong knowledge of all invasive and non‑invasive cardiac investigations and exceptional leadership ability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform full range of diagnostic procedures, including transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, stress echo, contrast and bubble studies; produce accurate written clinical reports and advise clinicians where necessary.
  • Lead and support the team on out‑of‑hours on‑call rota for PPCI and urgent cardiac procedures.
  • Mentor and supervise Trainee Clinical Physiologists, ETP & STP trainees, healthcare science assistants and junior medical staff.
  • Provide expert training and advice to clinicians and support staff.
  • Administer and interpret invasive monitoring during Cath Lab angiography and PCI, and perform ECG, ETT and ambulatory monitoring.
  • Lead audit and research activities and deliver training and education across the Cardiology team.
  • Support the Head of Service and Operational Head in planning, day‑to‑day running and operational management of the department.
  • Develop and maintain quality control, equipment troubleshooting and corrective action programmes.

Person Specification

Skills and Knowledge

  • Able to undertake complex eye‑hand coordination tasks and fine analytical techniques.
  • Highly developed dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.
  • IT literate, proficient with common computing packages and scientific equipment.
  • In‑depth knowledge of cardiac physiology and application to direct clinical care.
  • Understanding of quality control, management assurance and scientific literature analysis.
  • Ability to develop proficiency in routine and complex clinical techniques and follow SOPs accurately.
  • Strong problem‑identification and corrective action skills for scientific equipment and testing.
  • Autonomous, prioritising, and coordinating work effectively.

Physical Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to explain complex scientific concepts to multidisciplinary teams and patients.
  • Strong presentation and active listening skills.
  • Self‑aware, flexible, and emotionally resilient under pressure.
  • Capability to organise, plan, and monitor workload of others.
  • Willingness to travel to off‑site locations as required.

Qualifications

  • BSc Clinical Physiology (or equivalent) and at least 2 years as a Senior Clinical Physiologist, or completion of an STP programme.
  • Specialist knowledge in Cardiac Pacing or Echocardiography.
  • BSE accreditation.
  • Registration with AHCS, RCCP, HCPC.
  • ALS certification.

Experience

  • Practical experience in cardiac investigations within physiology.
  • Two years’ experience at a Senior Clinical Physiologist level in all procedures.
  • Experience sufficient to register with RCCP/AHCS/HCPC.
  • Independent performance and reporting of adult transthoracic echocardiograms, TOE, DSE and complex echo.
  • Operational management and team leadership experience.
  • Prior on‑call activity participation.
