Make an Impact in Public Sector Finance
We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Finance Officer to join our Finance team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering high-quality financial services that support strategic decision-making across the organisation.
You’ll work closely with budget holders, senior leaders, and service areas, helping drive financial performance, improve systems, and ensure strong governance and compliance.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Finance Officer, you’ll be at the heart of our financial operations, providing both hands-on support and strategic insight. Your role will include:
* Acting as a trusted finance partner to Budget Holders and Managers, providing expert advice and guidance
* Supporting budget setting, financial planning, and forecasting activities
* Monitoring financial performance, analysing variances, and helping identify efficiencies and savings
* Assisting in the preparation of statutory annual accounts and financial returns
* Managing and improving financial systems, processes, and controls
* Supporting capital programme monitoring and treasury management activities
* Maintaining compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards, and tax requirements (including VAT)
* Delivering clear financial information to non-finance colleagues, helping them make informed decisions
* Supporting exchequer services and ensuring accurate and timely payments
What they’re Looking For
We’re seeking a proactive and analytical finance professional who can confidently partner with stakeholders across the organisation.
Essential:
* A recognised accountancy qualification (e.g. AAT) or relevant degree
* Strong experience in financial accounting, including budgeting, forecasting, reconciliations, and year-end processes
* Experience using financial systems and reporting tools
* Ability to analyse complex data and present clear insights
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance colleagues
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure
* A collaborative approach and ability to build relationships across all levels
Desirable:
* Studying towards a professional accountancy qualification (e.g. ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA)
* Experience in a public sector or similar financial environment
* Knowledge of Local Authority accounting, IFRS, UK GAAP, and VAT
