General Building Operative

We are recruiting an experienced General Building Operative to work at HMP Wymott, expected to be ongoing on a temporary basis for the next 6 months. This is a long-term temporary contract offering sociable, full-time hours and overtime. There is the possibility for a permanent role for the right candidate.

Your new role:
Carry out general building repairs and maintenance across the prison estate.
Complete routine DIY tasks including decorating, minor repairs, assembling furniture and fitting notice boards.
Assist qualified tradespeople with maintenance and refurbishment works.
Perform basic checks on fixtures, fittings and equipment, reporting defects to the relevant supervisor.
Undertake general housekeeping duties, including litter picking and maintaining outdoor areas when required.
Escort contractors and visitors within secure areas of the prison when required.
Ensure all work is completed in accordance with prison security procedures and safe systems of work.
Maintain accurate records of completed maintenance tasks and report any issues promptly. (Suggested standard practice for maintenance roles.)
Support the wider facilities management team with additional duties as directed by management.
Promote and maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance.
Details:
Pay Frequency: Weekly
Working Days: Monday to Friday (overtime cover at weekends available)
Working Hours: 39 hours per week
Additional: There may be a requirement for weekend work on a rota basis (1 in 3 or 4), and also part of an on-call rota

What you'll need to succeed
You will need to be honest, hard-working, reliable, trustworthy and have great attention to detail, alongside being an excellent team player. All applicants who are interested in the position must pass Prison Clearance, which can take up to 8 weeks or more. You will need a passport or photo driving licence to apply for clearance. Once passed, this is valid for 5 years and can be transferred to any other prisons of a similar category.

Qualifications
Time served apprenticeship in a relevant trade
City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in joinery or similar discipline
Current full UK driving licence
Skills
Basic numeracy and literacy skills
Joinery
Tiling
Minor plumbing - Desirable
Minor plastering - Desirable
Interpersonal skills
Time Management
Ability to use PDA device
Good awareness and understanding of personal health and safety, method statements and risk assessments
Experience
Ideally, 2 years of relevant work-related experience
