Chair – The Office of Environmental Governance Wales

The Welsh Government is looking to appoint a Chair for The Office of Environmental Governance Wales (OEGW), an independent Arm’s Length Body that will play a central role in Wales’ response to the climate and nature emergencies.

Established through the Environment (Principles, Governance and Biodiversity Targets) (Wales) Act 2026, The OEGW will provide independent oversight of environmental law in Wales, ensuring that Welsh Ministers and public bodies are held accountable for meeting their environmental responsibilities.

This is an opportunity to shape a nationally significant organisation from its inception, helping to create a more sustainable, accountable and resilient future for Wales and future generations.

As Chair, you will provide strategic leadership to the Board and oversee the successful establishment of the organisation. You will safeguard its independence, steer its development and help build its reputation as a trusted and authoritative voice in Welsh environmental governance.

The OEGW will monitor compliance with environmental law, investigate concerns, provide advice and guidance, and support long-term environmental improvement across Wales.

We’re looking for an experienced senior leader with substantial board‑level experience, strong governance and stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to operate with independence, integrity and sound judgement. You will bring an inclusive leadership style and a commitment to the highest standards of public service.

Knowledge of environmental law, environmental policy, environmental science or regulatory environments is preferrable.

Closing date: 4pm, 2 September 2026

Remuneration: £348 per day plus expenses

Time Commitment: Up to 4 days per month for the first two years (reducing to 2 days a month for the remainder of the term)
