An opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Rehabilitation Engineer at the SMART (Southeast Mobility and Rehabilitation Technology) Centre, Astley Ainslie Hospital, Edinburgh. The SMART Centre provides highly specialised clinical rehabilitation technology services across southeast Scotland.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Specialist Rehabilitation Engineer to join our Rehabilitation Engineering workshop team. This is a senior technical post within a multidisciplinary clinical service.

The role involves the manufacture, modification, repair and maintenance of custom‑made and adapted medical and assistive technology devices, working to clinical prescription and technical specifications. You will contribute to the design and development of bespoke solutions and act as a technical lead within a specialist area while supporting work across assistive technology services. You will assist with patient assessments and determining solutions to overcome patient functional and environmental barriers within the scope of service eligibility criteria. As well as assessments you will be involved in fittings, repairs and equipment reviews. Depending on the patient’s needs, you may be working as part of a multidisciplinary team or working independently. You will work both in the workshop and directly with patients in clinics, satellite sites and home environments.

The role includes fault finding, servicing, and maintaining accurate technical and patient records in line with quality systems.

The post holder will also provide technical guidance and day‑to‑day supervision to Rehabilitation Technicians and Engineers, contribute to service development and innovation, and work closely with clinical colleagues to ensure a seamless patient service. The role requires flexibility, strong problem‑solving ability, and the capacity to work independently with a high level of responsibility. Travel to satellite clinics and patient homes will be required.

To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.
