Hire Desk Controller

Location: Harpenden, Hertfordshire
Salary: £30,000-£32,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:30pm
The Role
Our client, a specialist equipment hire business based in Harpenden, is looking for an organised and customer-focused Hire Desk Controller to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in equipment hire, plant hire or a similar customer-facing, operational role to manage hire enquiries, coordinate equipment availability and ensure a smooth service for customers. You will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day running of the hire desk, working closely with customers, drivers and internal departments to deliver an efficient and reliable service.
Overview
Managing incoming hire enquiries, bookings and customer requests.
Preparing hire quotations, processing orders and confirming equipment availability.
Coordinating equipment deliveries, collections and off-hires.
Maintaining accurate hire records, contracts and customer information.
Liaising with customers to understand their requirements and recommend suitable equipment.
Coordinating with drivers, transport teams, service engineers and depot staff to ensure equipment is delivered on time.
Monitoring ongoing hires, extensions and returns, ensuring records are kept up to date.
Handling customer queries and resolving hire-related issues professionally.
Supporting the wider team with the day-to-day administration and smooth operation of the hire desk.
Building and maintaining strong relationships with new and existing customers.
Requirements
Previous experience in a hire desk, plant hire, equipment rental or a similar operational role would be advantageous.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple bookings and priorities.
Confident using computer systems and handling administrative tasks.
A proactive approach to problem-solving and customer queries.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a busy, fast-paced environment.
Commercial awareness and a customer-focused attitude.
Salary & Benefits
Salary of £30,000-£32,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Monday to Friday working hours, 8:00am-5:30pm.
