Environmental Protection Officer / Environmental Health Technical Officer Temporary – Full Time (Initial 3‑Month Contract) £45.00 – £50.00 per hour (Umbrella) 📍 Essex 🗓 Closing Date: 15 May 2026 Vivid Resourcing is recruiting on behalf of an Essex Local Authority for an Environmental Protection Officer / Environmental Health Technical Officer to join their team on an initial 3‑month temporary basis. The successful candidate will be required to work on‑site within the Council offices and across the District. The Role We are looking for an enthusiastic, self‑motivated team player to undertake a full range of pollution and public health‑related duties within an assigned geographical area. You will also support other members of the Environmental Health team as required. This role is largely complaints‑driven and will involve investigation, enforcement and advisory work, alongside responding to planning and licensing consultations and contributing to wider public health initiatives. Key Responsibilities * Investigate complaints and requests for service relating to pollution and public health matters * Carry out statutory nuisance investigations and secure compliance through informal and formal enforcement, including serving notices where necessary * Investigate filthy and verminous premises, hoarding cases, pest issues, waste accumulation and drainage matters * Record and manage all matters of environmental significance within the allocated area * Work collaboratively within the team and provide cover for absent colleagues * Review and respond to Planning and Licensing consultations * Support and deliver public health initiatives * Attend and advise Area Committees where required, including presenting reports * Comply with Corporate Quality, Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities policies * Demonstrate flexibility, including willingness to work outside normal office hours when required * Support business continuity and assist during civil emergencies when necessary The Experience You Will Bring * Degree in Environmental Health or equivalent (e.g. Diploma in Environmental Health) (desirable) * Registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board (desirable) * Experience investigating statutory nuisance cases * Proven experience dealing with filthy and verminous premises, pest and hoarding cases * Planning and Licensing consultation response experience * Knowledge of drainage investigations and enforcement, including rural settings * Understanding of regulatory compliance and enforcement procedures * Ability to work effectively with a wide range of customers and stakeholders Why?
