Cardiff | £46,000 – £57,000 plus benefits

A growing planning practice is looking for a Principal Planning Consultant to join its Cardiff team. The consultancy advises public and private clients throughout Wales and the South West and is known for practical, responsive advice.

Opportunity

The team’s workload includes housing, regeneration, commercial development, renewable energy and strategic land. The central purpose of the position is to lead a varied portfolio and support junior planners without needing to arrive with a client following.

• Prepare clear planning appraisals, statements and strategic advice.
• Manage planning applications and coordinate technical inputs.
• Maintain regular, professional communication with clients and project teams.
• Negotiate constructively with local planning authorities and other stakeholders.
• Review work produced by junior colleagues and support their development.
• Contribute to fee proposals, client development and the commercial management of projects.

About you

Mrtpi or close; development management experience; understanding of the welsh planning system. You should also be organised, dependable and able to explain planning issues in straightforward language. The business is interested in people who value good advice and long‑term client relationships rather than unnecessary internal politics.

You are not expected to know everything on day one. What matters is a sound academic base, some practical understanding of the planning system and the judgement to ask for support when needed.

Package and working arrangements

The salary is £46,000 – £57,000 plus benefits. The wider package includes hybrid working, annual bonus, private medical cover and progression towards Associate. Exact arrangements will depend on experience and will be discussed openly during the process.
