At Allstate, great things happen when our people work together to protect families and their belongings from life's uncertainties. For more than 90 years, our drive has kept us ahead of our customers' evolving needs, including advocacy for safety measures, pricing sophistication, telematics, and device and identity protection.

Your role in the team

This role is responsible for leading the use of data to make decisions, with a focus on supporting the Casualty business through predictive modeling and machine learning solutions. It includes developing and recommending new machine learning predictive modeling algorithms, coding/developing tools that use machine learning to support business decisions, identifying and integrating new data (internal and external), and discovering new business problems solvable through machine learning and predictive modeling. The role also includes assisting in the mentorship and development of junior data scientists and beginning to manage complex projects as an individual contributor.

Responsibilities

  • Use best practices to develop complex statistical and machine learning techniques to build models addressing business needs, including Casualty-related outcomes such as claim severity, disputes, settlement strategy, and operational efficiency.
  • Review, evaluate, and communicate the appropriateness of modeling techniques and results to the team, leadership, and stakeholders to ensure they are understood and integrated into business processes.
  • Develop and execute a communication strategy, keep stakeholders informed, and influence business partners and senior leaders on the effectiveness of machine learning/predictive modeling to solve business problems; explain technical information clearly to non-technical partners.
  • Plan projects effectively, breaking down complex modeling and development work into tasks, managing scope, developing project plans, and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Manage analytical and modeling projects with a small team, and work independently with customers after initial onboarding.
  • Support, mentor, and coach junior data scientists and team members as needed.
  • Collaborate with and influence business units, including design teams and Casualty partners, to improve decision quality and results through designing, building, and deploying models; align business problems with the appropriate modeling approach.
  • Identify languages and tools that improve efficiencies, including Python, SQL, R, and exposure to AWS or Azure cloud environments; develop data sources that solve business problems.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of data science, machine learning, predictive modeling, and/or querying data experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, SQL, and/or R.
  • Experience building or applying machine learning/predictive models to solve business problems.
  • Ability to query data and work with databases/data sources.
  • Ability to explain technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with customers after initial onboarding.

Desirable Skills

  • Master's Degree in a highly quantitative field such as mathematics, physics, or computer science.
  • Experience working in the insurance industry.
