About the role

Overview

Principal Design Engineer – responsible for leading and managing all engineering activities for transmission substation projects from early engagement through to as-built, with a focus on HV, EHV and AIS & GIS design and construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering activities and ensure compliance with Linxon standards, QA/QC, HSSE, and project specifications.
  • Technical lead for large and complex EHV/HV Substation projects in the UK.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and provide guidance to local and remote engineering teams, partners, sub‑suppliers and external suppliers.
  • Coordinate interfaces between construction planning, steel structure engineering, protection and control systems, auxiliary power systems and all equipment suppliers.
  • Lead technical discussions with customers and suppliers, address site queries and deliver as-built documentation.
  • Manage engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk, change and technical claims.
  • Develop and deliver technical solutions – single line diagrams, layouts, detailed drawings, specifications, calculations, cost estimates, and tender support.
  • Review supplier designs, attend factory and site tests, and provide technical support throughout the project life cycle.
  • Travel 25% of the time (domestic and international) and support hybrid working arrangements.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Proven experience in transmission substation engineering, detailed design, tender processes, and site support.
  • Knowledge of SSEN, SPEN requirements and industry standards.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
  • Fluency in English – written and spoken.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong communication and team working in a multi‑cultural environment.
  • Expertise in substation design, layouts, primary design & calculations, grounding, lightning, steel design, transformers, HV & MV switchgear, system studies, single line diagrams, CT/VT calculations, auxiliary power systems, power cables, and protection & control systems.
  • Knowledge of installation and commissioning.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, MicroStation and AutoCAD.
  • Result‑oriented, proactive approach to problem solving and technical innovation.
