The Opportunity
We are recruiting an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established engineering business specialising in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke industrial machinery and automation equipment.
This is an opportunity for an established design engineer to take ownership of mechanical engineering projects, producing detailed designs and engineering documentation from initial concept through to manufacture and final assembly.
The business is looking to strengthen its existing engineering team with someone who brings substantial hands-on mechanical design experience, strong technical judgement and a genuine interest in developing a long-term career within mechanical design engineering.
We are particularly interested in engineers who have spent several years designing mechanical equipment, machinery, mechanisms or complex assemblies within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Working as part of the engineering team, your responsibilities will include:

Taking ownership of mechanical design projects from initial concept and development through to manufacture and assembly.
*
Producing detailed 3D CAD models, mechanical assemblies and accurate engineering drawings.
*
Preparing manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials (BOMs) and associated technical documentation.
*
Designing mechanical equipment, mechanisms, moving assemblies and mechanical drive systems.
*
Applying design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA) principles to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective and reliable.
*
Reviewing existing designs, resolving technical issues and implementing engineering improvements.
*
Considering reliability, performance, safety, maintainability and cost throughout the design process.
*
Supporting projects through design reviews, manufacture, assembly and final completion.
Skills & Experience
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate an established background in mechanical design engineering.
Ideally, you will have:

Several years' experience working in a Mechanical Design Engineer or similar design-focused engineering position.
*
A strong background in designing industrial machinery, mechanical equipment, mechanisms or complex assemblies.
*
Proven experience producing detailed engineering and manufacturing drawings.
*
Experience taking mechanical designs from concept through to manufacture and assembly.
*
Strong 3D CAD capability, with experience using professional mechanical design software such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Solid Edge or similar.
*
Good knowledge of manufacturing processes, fabrication, machining and practical engineering constraints.
*
Experience applying design for manufacture and assembly principles.
*
The ability to work independently, take ownership of design projects and make sound technical decisions.
*
A genuine interest in developing a long-term career within mechanical design engineering.
A degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or an equivalent relevant engineering qualification would be advantageous.

Candidates from a range of engineering and manufacturing sectors will be considered, particularly those with experience in:

Machine tools and precision engineering.

Packaging and processing machinery.

Material handling and conveyor systems.

Mechanical mechanisms and moving assemblies.

Rotating machinery and mechanical drive systems.
Experience within the exact same industry is not essential. However, candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial mechanical design experience and an understanding of how their designs translate into manufactured, working equipment.

This is not primarily a CAD operator or mechanical assembly position. The business is looking for someone whose main strength is mechanical design engineering, supported by practical manufacturing knowledge.
