Job Title Child Care Solicitor Department Family Law / Childrens Services Reports To Head of Family Law / Principal Solicitor (Child Care) Purpose of the Role To provide expert legal advice, representation, and advocacy in matters relating to child care, including public law children proceedings, adoption cases, and other related matters under the Children Act 1989 and subsequent legislation.

Key Responsibilities Manage a diverse caseload of public law children matters, including care proceedings, supervision orders, and adoption cases.

Represent children, parents, guardians, and other interested parties in court hearings, tribunals, and related legal proceedings.

Provide clear, accurate, and empathetic legal advice tailored to the needs of clients.

Undertake advocacy, liaising with counsel as necessary, and prepare detailed case documents, including pleadings, witness statements, and other court submissions.

Maintain accurate case management records and ensure compliance with professional and organisational standards.

Conduct legal research, interpret legislation, and summarise case law relevant to child care and family law matters.

Advise and support internal teams, including social workers and other professionals, on legal and procedural matters.

Contribute to team development, mentoring junior staff, and sharing best practices.

Engage in business development activities and professional networking to support departmental growth.

Person Specification Essential Qualifications & Experience Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive (CILEx) with full rights of advocacy.

Law Societys Children Law Accreditation or equivalent.

/ Must be panel accredited Substantial experience in public law children proceedings, including care and adoption matters.

Excellent knowledge of the Children Act 1989, Adoption and Children Act 2002, Public Law Outline, Family Procedure Rules, and related statutory frameworks.

Strong advocacy, oral, and written communication skills.

Proven ability to manage complex caseloads and work independently under pressure.

Commitment to client-focused service and upholding professional ethics.

Desirable Skills & Experience Experience mentoring or supervising junior colleagues or paralegals.

Familiarity with legal aid processes, CCMS systems, and private funding arrangements.

Knowledge of local government frameworks and inter-agency practice.

Active participation in professional organisations such as Resolution or Association of Lawyers for Children.

Ability to adapt to varying client needs and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Competent in IT systems relevant to legal practice, case recording, and document management.
