Job Description
We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Manager to support the efficient day-to-day operation of our sequencing laboratory. This is a hands-on position that combines laboratory management with practical scientific work. You will play a key role in maintaining laboratory operations, managing inventory and procurement processes, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and contributing to sample and library preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS) according to business need.
As part of a collaborative R&D team, you will help maintain a well-organised, safe, and productive laboratory environment, enabling the delivery of high-quality research and development activities.
Please note this role is based on a 12-month fixed term contract, and the successful candidate will be required to be based in our Hinxton laboratory full time.
Everyday responsibilities include:
Manage laboratory stocks, reagents, and consumables, including forecasting requirements to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations.
Oversee laboratory procurement, equipment maintenance, and general operational activities.
Maintain and improve laboratory documentation, including SOPs, sample inventory, and process-tracking systems.
Support risk assessments and ensure compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
Collaborate with R&D scientists to optimise sequencing workflows and support laboratory automation initiatives.
Perform laboratory-based activities when required. Skills and Experience for success:
Experience managing laboratory operations, including stock control, purchasing, and equipment maintenance.
Practical experience with NGS technologies and sequencing platforms.
Experience in sample handling and management within a laboratory environment.
Experience in NGS assay development and mid-throughput sequencing workflows, or equivalent laboratory management experience in a related field.
Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively. Desirable Requirements:
Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Intermediate to advance skills in Excel and RStudio for data manipulation and visualization.
Experience in hardware/software maintenance and basic Shell/Bash usage.
Knowledge of biobanking practices and large-scale sample collections.
Experience with Oxford Nanopore Technologies and long-read sequencing workflows.
A strong interest in emerging sequencing technologies and their application to clinical and translational research.
Qualifications
BSc or MSc in biological science disciplines.
