Field Service Engineer

Field Service Engineer – Heavy Industrial / Electro‑Mechanical Location: Crawley / Horsham / Guildford / Leatherhead corridor Salary: £38,000 – £40,000 + overtime + benefits. Job type: Permanent, full-time | Field-based We’re recruiting a hands-on Field Service Engineer to cover Crawley and the wider Surrey/Sussex corridor (Crawley, Horsham, Guildford, Leatherhead and surrounding areas), working on large, heavy-duty electro‑mechanical gate and materials handling systems. This is not light commercial or domestic work – it’s heavy industrial kit. What’s on offer * £38,000 – £40,000 basic salary (experience dependent) * Overtime and call-out to increase overall earnings * OTE expected around £50,000 per annum * Company vehicle, tools, PPE and workwear * Training and development, especially in electrical fault-finding on our equipment The role You’ll be responsible for installation, service, maintenance and repair of: * Heavy conveyors and material handling systems * Large electro‑mechanical gates and associated equipment * Pumps, shafts, bearings, gearboxes, chains, rams and pulleys Day-to-day you will: * Strip down and rebuild mechanical assemblies * Diagnose and replace failed bearings, shafts, chains, etc. * Fault-find on electrical control panels with PLCs (no programming), safety relays, E‑stops, sensors/photocells and motor controllers * Work on customer sites, often outdoors and in all weather * Attend breakdowns, working methodically to find and fix faults What we’re looking for Background (must be heavy/industrial). Examples that work well: * Heavy manufacturing / processing (e.g. building products, aggregates, heavy plant) * Industrial conveyor / materials handling environments * Agricultural / large off‑highway machinery * Ex‑Forces engineers used to large electro‑mechanical systems We are not looking for: White goods / domestic appliance engineers Light-duty hospital equipment, stairlifts, vending/coffee machines, etc. Pure bench or test technicians Skills Ideally: 50/50 electro‑mechanical, or electrically biased with strong mechanical skills Strong mechanical engineers with good exposure to electrics who are keen to upskill You should be able to: * Strip and rebuild pumps, shafts and bearings * Work safely with heavy components and lifting equipment * Understand how control panels and PLC-based systems function (inputs/outputs, safety circuits) * Fault-find electrically in a logical, step-by-step way – breaking a big panel into smaller circuits rather than “pulling wires” at random * Be confident around electrics and willing to learn more (full training given on our systems) The person Practical, “hands-dirty” engineer who doesn’t mind graft Happy working outdoors, sometimes in poor weather Positive attitude, wants to learn, especially on the electrical side Comfortable working alone on customer sites and as part of a wider team Some of our best engineers started from a strong mechanical background and developed the electrical side with us. Requirements Based within reasonable travel of Crawley / Horsham / Guildford / Leatherhead Full UK driving licence (we will check licence status/bans/points) British passport holder in the UK Happy to do 1 week in 4 on call (inc weekends) Willing to travel within the wider region when needed Interested?
