About the role
Shift Team Leader – Biomass / Energy From Waste
Widmerpool | 24/7 Shift Pattern | Permanent
A step‑up opportunity for senior operators ready for more responsibility
This role exists because the site needs strong on‑shift decision‑making, not just supervision.
We’re supporting a well‑established biomass / EfW power generation site looking for a Shift Team Lead to take ownership of safe, compliant plant operation on a rotating shift pattern. The site is open to experienced process or power operators ready to step up into formal shift leadership, provided they have the right technical and safety foundation.
The role – what you’ll actually be responsible for
As Shift Team Leader, you’ll be the senior operational authority on shift, responsible for the safe and efficient running of the plant when engineering and management aren’t on site.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Operating and monitoring the plant from the Control Room (DCS/SCADA)
* Maintaining safe, compliant operation in line with HSQE and EA Environmental Permit requirements
* Acting as, or developing into, a Senior Authorised Person (SAP) – controlling isolations and ensuring safety from the system
* Responding to plant trips, faults and abnormal operations
* Monitoring CEMS and emissions trends, taking corrective action where required
* Issuing and controlling Permits to Work and overseeing contractors on shift
* Supporting first‑line fault diagnosis and minor maintenance activities
* Ensuring accurate logging, reporting and handover between shifts
* Providing guidance and oversight to operators and site personnel on shift
This is a hands‑on operational role, not a desk‑based people management position.
Who this role will suit
We are actively encouraging applications from experienced operators who are ready to take the next step.
You could be suitable if you are currently working as a:
* Senior Process Operator
* Lead / Shift Operator
* Control Room Operator
* Utilities / Power Plant Operato
and are already trusted to carry real responsibility on shift, even if you don’t yet hold the “Shift Team Lead” title.
What we’re looking for
Essential experience:
* Background in power generation, EfW, biomass, utilities, chemicals or heavy process
* Hands‑on Control Room operation using DCS / SCADA
* Experience working 24/7 or rotating shifts
* Strong understanding of safe systems of work and permit‑to‑work
* Confident decision‑maker during nights and weekends
Highly desirable (but not all essential):
* SAP or permit‑issuing authority (or clear potential to develop into SAP)
* Emissions / CEMS monitoring and environmental compliance exposure
* Experience with boilers, steam systems, turbines or energy centres
* Involvement in start‑ups, shutdowns or abnormal operations
What’s on offer
* Permanent role on a well‑run, regulated energy site
* Clear development pathway for operators stepping into shift leadership
* Structured training and authorisation for SAP responsibilities where required
* Competitive shift‑based salary and benefits
* Long‑term stability in a safety‑critical environment
