SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry. We are seeking a Research Mechanical Technician to become part of the Experimental Design and Support (EDS) group within the organisation to assist in the design, manufacture and modification of experimental equipment across the site. You will bring a mechanical engineering background, with hands‑on experience in mechanical assembly and systems involving hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps and fluid handling together with basic electrical skills applicable to experimental and test equipment. Experience in welding and/or 3D printing would be advantageous. While strong practical skills are essential, training will be provided where required, and we particularly welcome applicants who demonstrate enthusiasm, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new techniques and technologies. This is a full‑time, permanent, on‑site role based in Cambridge, reporting to the EDS Manager, where you will be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team working at the forefront of technology development for the energy sector, contributing to projects spanning emerging low‑carbon solutions alongside established oil and gas applications. Qualified to at least HND/HNC level in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent). Strong hands‑on mechanical engineering experience, including manufacture and assembly of complex, bespoke equipment. Ability to design complete rigs and assemblies, selecting appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques to meet high‑quality standards and tight tolerances. Experience in the assembly, commissioning, operation and maintenance of custom laboratory or test rigs, including large‑scale experimental equipment. Knowledge and practical experience of fluids and gas handling systems, including valves, regulators, pumps, filtration and instrumentation; experience with rig design using industrial tubing and fittings (e.g. Understanding of pressurised systems and fluid safety, including basic risk assessment, leak testing, and safe operation in laboratory or test environments. Electrical skills relevant to experimental rigs, including instrumentation, sensors, actuators, interlocks, and basic control or automation systems. Understand and use working engineering drawings created using CAD, able to troubleshoot or modify designs. Experienced user of workshop machinery, including manual and CNC mills and lathes; Welding and fabrication skills Experience producing CAD designs and engineering drawings for bespoke laboratory or test equipment. Experience with the use and maintenance of 3D printers for prototyping and low‑volume parts manufacture.
