Consultant Psychiatrist – Adult Mental Health Community

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust

Job closing date: 28 August 2026.
Location: Hummingbird House, Harrogate; working with the Ripon Integrated Community Team covering Ripon, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge.

Main Duties

  • Provide consultant input in line with New Ways of Working principles.
  • Lead outpatient clinics, formulation, review and leadership meetings, and Mental Health Act‑related work.
  • Conduct up to two new assessments per week after initial assessment by the care coordinator.
  • Conduct approximately ten follow‑up assessments per week and review caseload regularly.
  • Share cover arrangements and supervise junior medical staff with the other post holder.
  • Act as lead professional for patients not subject to CPA.

Job Responsibilities

  • Deliver clinical work in community mental health settings, including crisis and resolution services.
  • Contribute to transformation of mental health services, collaborating with acute hospital liaison and crisis resolution/home treatment teams.

  • Influence and persuade to improve services; lead multidisciplinary and wider teams.
  • Understand NHS structure, quality improvement, and lean thinking methodology.

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

  • Deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, research, service evaluation, and clinical audit.
  • Demonstrate achievements in education, research, audit and service improvement.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Fully registered with the GMC and licensed to practise at appointment.
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register in the specialty or within 6 months of gaining CCT.
  • Approved clinician status, or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
  • Approved under S12, or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
  • Higher qualification in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
  • Included on GMC Specialist Register.

Clinical Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of the specialty, using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty, make evidence‑based decisions.
  • Ability to meet duties under the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
  • Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to the post.

Experience

  • Experience of working within the specialty.
  • Any other relevant experience.

Salary

£113,565 to £150,569 per year; this post may attract a recruitment premia.
