Premises Assistant / Site Support – Job Description
We are seeking a reliable and proactive Premises Assistant to support the maintenance, safety, and smooth running of a multi-site educational environment.
Salary & Hours
Salary: £26,620 – £30,328 per annum
Hours: 35 hours per week, year-round
A split-shift pattern would best suit the needs of the setting:
Early start with finish around 10:00am
Second shift starting approximately 2:00pm–3:00pm, working a further 4 hours
During school holidays, hours can be worked in one continuous shift, as there are no learners on siteThis approach helps ensure that maintenance and operational work does not disrupt learners during the school day.
Must hold an Enhanced DBS on the update service
Must have a valid clean UK licence to travel between sites.
Site Coverage
The role covers multiple locations across 5 sites in Berkshire
The successful candidate will be required to work flexibly across all sites. Some reactive work may be fast-paced and urgent, however planned maintenance and scheduled tasks can be organised in advance.
Role Overview
The Premises Assistant will be responsible for ensuring that all sites are safe, secure, clean, and well maintained. The role includes a mix of planned maintenance, site upkeep, and reactive response work across multiple locations.
Building & Site Management
Oversee day-to-day maintenance, cleaning, and repair of the school site
Carry out regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment, keeping accurate records
Identify maintenance needs and ensure timely completion of repairs and minor works
Undertake basic repairs and DIY tasks within capability
Support and implement planned maintenance and refurbishment programmes
Maintain a safe, clean, and well-presented school environment at all times
Contractor & Facilities Management
Supervise grounds maintenance and cleaning contractors to ensure high standards are maintained
Monitor contractor performance and report to senior leadership
Assist with procurement, tender documentation, and specification of small works
Ensure value for money and compliance with agreed contracts
Security & Keyholding
Act as keyholder and manage school opening and closing procedures
Ensure buildings are secure at the end of each day (doors, windows, gates, alarms)
Monitor and test intruder alarms, fire systems, CCTV, and emergency lighting
Conduct weekly and monthly security and safety checks
Respond to emergency call-outs as required
Support security arrangements for lettings and out-of-hours events
Health & Safety Compliance
Carry out regular health & safety inspections and risk assessments
Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation (COSHH, manual handling, fire safety, etc.)
Maintain records of inspections, checks, and statutory testing
Ensure safe storage and use of equipment and cleaning materials
Arrange and record PAT testing and routine servicing of equipment
Ensure safe access to site during adverse weather conditions
Maintain awareness of key utilities and emergency shut-off points
Site Operations & Maintenance
Manage heating, hot water, and basic building systems
Take and record utility readings (energy and water)
Carry out porterage duties including furniture movement and deliveries
Replace light bulbs, fittings, and carry out minor maintenance tasks
Ensure waste disposal, recycling, and site cleanliness are maintained
Support emergency cleaning or urgent site issues when required
Administration
Maintain accurate records of equipment, plant, and maintenance schedules
Support budget monitoring for maintenance and site-related expenditure
Order supplies and materials in liaison with senior staff
Maintain digital records using IT systems and databases
General Responsibilities
Promote safeguarding and the welfare of children at all times
Support equality, diversity, and inclusion across all duties
Follow all school policies and procedures, including health & safety and safeguarding
Undertake other reasonable duties as required by senior leadership
