Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a special interest in skin cancer management within Cardiff and Vale University Dental Hospital. The University Hospital of Wales is the first Major Trauma Centre to launch within Wales. The Major Trauma Centre is part of an inclusive and collaborative South West and Mid Wales Trauma Network spanning six Health Board areas.

The Board is seeking forward‑thinking surgeons who will develop a service fit to care for the needs of the population of Cardiff and the Vale and who possess the skills and attributes to take the lead in skin cancer management.

The OMFS posts will be based in the Head and Neck Directorate within the Surgery Clinical Board.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Applicants should preferably be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of eligibility for inclusion.

A satisfactory disclosure check will be required of the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

You will provide, together with consultant colleagues, a service in the speciality to the designated hospitals, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health. The work will be based at both University Hospital of Wales and the University Dental Hospital. You will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical/dental staff. The post holder may be named as the person responsible for overseeing their training and providing initial career advice to such doctors. The successful candidate will participate in a 1 in 6 Trauma on‑call rota and will be required to cover for consultant colleagues’ leave periods.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • Full Registration with the UK GMC
  • On the GMC Specialist list in OMFS or within six months of eligibility for inclusion
  • ICSFE examination in OMFS or equivalent
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in OMFS
  • MRCS or equivalent membership of the Royal College of Surgeons
  • Current ATLS provider certificate
  • ATLS trainer status
  • GDC Registration

Experience

  • Evidence of work in general OMFS work including head and neck oncology
  • Evidence of work and management of skin malignancy
  • Ability to carry out oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures to a specialist level
  • Experience of supervising and developing staff

Clinical Governance

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of audit’s role in improving practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation

Research

  • Publications in peer‑review journals
  • Ability to critically appraise research
  • Evidence of active research interests
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
  • PG research qualification

Management

  • Commitment to participating in and understanding of the management process
  • Good clinical leadership skills and ability to develop effective clinical teams
  • Evidence of management training
  • Experience in committee work

Teaching

  • Evidence of teaching medical/dental students and junior doctors/dentists
  • Organisation of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching programmes

Personal Qualities

  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
  • Self‑motivated and flexible approach to work
  • Values aligned to those of the Health Board
  • Demonstrable written and spoken English skills adequate for effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
