About the role
As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils aged 2-19 who have severe to profound learning difficulties, many of whom also have additional needs such as physical disabilities, sensory impairments, and autistic spectrum conditions. You will work as part of a skilled, multidisciplinary team to deliver a rich, functional, and communicative curriculum focused on independence, personal autonomy, life skills, and social relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the class teacher in delivering highly personalised activities that align with individual education plans (IEPs) and EHCP goals.
Support pupils' communication through the schools Total Communication philosophy, helping them to express themselves and be understood.
Facilitate development of functional life skills, such as self-care, social interaction, and leisure activities.
Aid in mobility, physical, and sensory support where needed, in cooperation with specialist staff (therapists, nurses, etc.).
Promote independence and personal autonomy, encouraging pupils to achieve "super-goals" like self-toileting or initiating communication.About You
Experience or willingness to work in a special education environment is essential; experience working with pupils who have severe learning difficulties is highly desirable.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong team ethic, but also confident working on your own initiative.
Compassion, patience, and resilience, with a genuine desire to support young people to live fulfilling and independent lives.
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. (Enhanced DBS required.)
Flexibility to work some training or meetings outside of regular hours.
Terms & Conditions
Hours: 30 hours/week (term-time) - typical hours 08:45-15:15 (or 31.25 hours for some roles).
Safeguarding: Enhanced DBS required.
