Project Engineer
About the role
Our client is a global engineering and technology group serving high-value chemical, pharmaceutical, energy and advanced materials customers. Its reputation is built on precision engineering and long-term customer partnerships.
The UK business has grown from its manufacturing roots into a solutions provider, supporting customers from laboratory research through to pilot and production scale.
The Role
As Project Engineer, you'll be the person who turns customer requirements into feasible, manufacturable systems. Around 40% of your time goes on custom projects - bespoke solutions built from the company's existing products and third-party components - which you'll project manage from design through to release to Operations.
The rest of your week is split between sustaining engineering on our existing product range (about 50%) and quality control (about 10%). You'll work closely with Sales, Product Management, Customer Success, Production and Supply Chain, so no two weeks look the same.
Responsibilities:
Custom projects (40%)
* Shape early sales opportunities in Salesforce, advising on feasibility, part numbers and BOM structure
* Turn customer orders into buildable systems: MRP part numbers, BOMs, drawings and documentation
* Support Operations through sourcing, build and test, in line with ISO 9001 and CE requirements
* Chair the weekly custom projects meeting
Sustaining engineering (50%)
* Manage engineering change requests for improvements, obsolescence and production or supplier issues, updating drawings, processes and manuals
* Maintain CE certification and implement new directives as they arrive
* Work with Production and suppliers to resolve issues and protect build schedules
* Support Customer Success with technical investigation of field issues
Quality (10%)
* Own incoming inspection for new and changed components: acceptance criteria, sampling plans and reports
* Raise and manage NCRs, ECRs and concessions
* Contribute to supplier assessment and performance monitoring
* Track Cost of Poor Quality and drive corrective and preventive actions
What you'll bring
Essential
* Mechanical design for manufacture experience, including product test methods
* CAD skills (Creo preferred) and familiarity with PDM/PLM data management
* Proven project experience, ideally taking designs from concept to release
* Structured root-cause analysis (5-Why, Ishikawa, 8D or similar)
* Quality control knowledge, including incoming inspection and non-conformance handling
* Awareness of Lean manufacturing principles
* Confidence with MRP/ERP, document control and CRM systems such as Salesforce
* Strong communication skills and a cross-functional way of working
Desirable
* Hands-on use of Lean and continuous improvement tools
* Supplier management experience: assessments, audits and corrective actions
* Customer-facing technical support experience
Benefits:
* Salary of £50,000
* 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays
* Private healthcare
* Contributory pension scheme
* Hybrid working flexibility
* Occasional UK and international travel to suppliers, customer sites and group locations
