Are you passionate about supporting young people who need guidance, structure, and encouragement to thrive? We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Behaviour Support Assistant to join a welcoming and well-supported school setting in the Greater Manchester area.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work with pupils who present social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. The school is committed to providing a safe, structured, and nurturing environment where students are supported both academically and emotionally, helping them overcome barriers to learning and reach their full potential.

You will be working within a highly supportive team of experienced teachers, SEN specialists, behaviour mentors, and pastoral staff who prioritise collaboration, staff wellbeing, and ongoing professional development. The leadership team is approachable and experienced, ensuring all staff feel valued and supported in their role.

The school offers excellent facilities tailored to support SEMH learners, including dedicated intervention rooms, breakout spaces, quiet regulation areas, and well-equipped classrooms designed to promote a calm and engaging learning environment. There are also outdoor spaces used for structured activities and emotional regulation support.

Conveniently located across Greater Manchester, the school is easily accessible via public transport routes and also offers on-site parking for those who drive, making commuting straightforward from surrounding areas.

The Role: As an SEMH Behaviour Support Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting pupils both in and out of the classroom. You will be expected to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils and act as a positive role model at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs on a 1:1 and small group basis
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner
  • Implementing behaviour support strategies and individual support plans
  • Promoting emotional regulation and positive coping strategies
  • Supporting engagement in lessons and encouraging participation
  • Working closely with teaching staff, SENCO, and pastoral teams
  • Creating a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, or strong transferable experience (e.g. care, youth work, coaching, mentoring)
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach to behaviour management
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to remain professional and composed in challenging situations
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people
  • Willingness to learn and engage in further training

What the School Offers:

  • A supportive and collaborative staff team
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • Clear behaviour policies and strong leadership support
  • Well-resourced classrooms and specialist SEMH facilities
  • Opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience in education

Whether you have direct school experience or are looking to transition from a care, support, or youth-based background, your skills are highly valued in this role.
