Reference guide
For the full guide, see Job Searching
Job searching while employed is a balancing act. You need to be active enough to find opportunities but discreet enough not to jeopardise what you have.
Don't use your work email or devices
This should go without saying, but use your personal email and phone for all job search activity. Many employers monitor work devices, and even if they don't, it's unprofessional.
Schedule interviews carefully
Early morning, lunch breaks, or late afternoon slots work best. Most employers understand that candidates have current commitments. If they offer interview times, don't be afraid to ask for options that work with your schedule.
Update your LinkedIn quietly
Turn off activity broadcasts before making changes to your profile. You can update your headline, skills, and experience without notifying your entire network.
Be honest with recruiters
Tell them you're currently employed and need discretion. Good recruiters understand this and will work around your availability. If they can't respect confidentiality, find a different recruiter.
Don't badmouth your current employer
In interviews, keep it positive. "I'm looking for new challenges" is fine. "My boss is terrible" is not. Hiring managers know that how you talk about your current employer is how you'll talk about them someday.
Give proper notice
When you get an offer, honour your notice period. Leaving professionally keeps the door open and protects your reputation in what's often a smaller industry than you think.
