As a Catering Services Rating (Chef), youll run high-performance kitchens at sea and ashore, fuel operational capability, and deliver world-class hospitality. From feeding Royal Marines in demanding environments to creating fine-dining experiences for VIPs and visiting dignitaries, this role blends catering, leadership, logistics, customer service, and operational readiness into one career-defining pathway.
Pay & Career Progression
Starting salary: £26,344 per year
Earning potential: Up to £64,866 per year at Warrant Officer 1
Fast Track Route: If you already have catering experience or relevant qualifications, you may be eligible for the Catering Services Fast Track and Higher Starting Pay Scheme, enabling you to start on £32,229 per year after Phase 2 training, with your higher pay backdated to the first day of Phase 2 once Fast Track competence is achieved
Six weeks paid leave per year
Pension , free healthcare & dental , and extensive training opportunities
What Youll Do
Operate and lead in a high-performance commercial kitchen
Prepare and deliver meals for ships companies, troops ashore, and elite VIP events
Manage menu planning, provisioning, stock control and kitchen logistics
Deliver front-of-house and back-of-house hospitality to Royal Navy standards
Maintain crew morale and operational fitness through high-quality meal delivery
Train as part of the ships firefighting, medical and damage control teams
Travel globally, gaining exposure to international cuisines and cultural experiences
Training & Qualifications Youll Gain
Fully funded apprenticeship and industry-recognised catering qualifications
Opportunities for GCSE, A-Level, apprenticeship, xwzovoh and degree-level study
Youll Receive Ongoing Professional Development to Build Skills in: Culinary excellence
